Storm Recovery: Don't Let a Contractor Scam Add to the Damage

When severe weather strikes, communities come together. Neighbors help neighbors, families assess damage, and everyone starts the difficult process of rebuilding.

Unfortunately, scammers often arrive just as quickly as cleanup crews.

Following recent severe storms and tornado activity in Wisconsin—including the tornado that impacted parts of Menasha—homeowners may find themselves facing urgent repairs, insurance claims, and decisions that need to be made quickly. While the desire to restore your home is understandable, it's important not to let urgency override caution.

Here are a few ways to protect yourself and your finances as you recover from a disaster.

1. Take a Breath Before Making Decisions

After a storm, it's natural to want to fix damage immediately. Scammers know this and often use high-pressure tactics to create a sense of urgency.

You may hear things like:

  • "We're already working in the neighborhood."
  • "This offer is only good today."
  • "You need to sign now before prices go up."
  • "Your insurance company will take care of everything."

A reputable contractor understands that major repairs are significant financial decisions and will give you time to review estimates, verify credentials, and ask questions.

If someone is pressuring you to act immediately, that's a warning sign.

2. Verify Before You Hire

Before agreeing to any work:

  • Get multiple estimates whenever possible.
  • Ask for proof of licensing and insurance.
  • Check online reviews and local references.
  • Verify the contractor's business address and contact information.
  • Research the company through trusted consumer protection resources.

Storm chasers often travel from community to community following disasters. While not every out-of-town contractor is illegitimate, it's wise to do your homework before signing a contract.

3. Be Careful with Upfront Payments

One of the most common contractor scams involves collecting a large deposit and disappearing before any meaningful work is completed.

To protect yourself:

  • Avoid paying the full amount upfront.
  • Be cautious of requests for cash-only payments.
  • Use traceable payment methods whenever possible.
  • Ensure payment terms are clearly outlined in a written contract.

A legitimate contractor should be able to explain exactly what your payment covers and when additional payments will be due.

4. Understand Your Insurance Claim

If your home has been damaged, contact your insurance provider before committing to repairs.

Be especially cautious if a contractor:

  • Offers to "handle" your entire claim.
  • Requests that you sign over insurance benefits.
  • Tells you they can guarantee claim approval.
  • Encourages you to inflate the value of the damage.

Your insurance company should remain a key part of the process, and you should fully understand any documents before signing them.

5. Get Everything in Writing

A handshake isn't enough when major repairs are involved.

A written contract should clearly explain:

  • The scope of work
  • Project timelines
  • Payment schedule
  • Materials being used
  • Warranty information
  • Change-order procedures

Never sign blank or incomplete documents. If something doesn't make sense, ask questions before signing.

6. Protect Your Personal Information

Disasters can also create opportunities for identity theft and financial fraud.

Be cautious about sharing:

  • Banking information
  • Credit card details
  • Social Security numbers
  • Insurance policy information

Only provide sensitive information when necessary and confirm that you're dealing with a legitimate business.

Financial Wellness Tip: Before hiring a contractor, ask a trusted friend or family member to review the estimate with you. A second set of eyes can often spot red flags that are easy to miss when you're focused on recovery.

Recovery Takes Time—That's Okay

Storm damage can make everything feel urgent. However, one of the best ways to protect yourself is simply to slow down.

Most contractor scams succeed because someone feels pressured to make a quick decision. Taking an extra day to verify a contractor, review a contract, or talk with your insurance company can save you from significant financial hardship later.
